Protecting Your Pets In The Winter

Posted by Steve McJuary on 1/15/2015

Protecting Your Pets In The WinterThe winter's harsh elements can be absolutely brutal on our health. During those freezing months, cold and flu viruses wreak havoc against our body's immune system. The freezing cold temperatures can put you at risk of pneumonia and frost bite. We do have the ability, however, to bare the cold with winter gear, heated cars and homes. This is not the case for pets.

Animals that are kept outdoors for longer than necessary during the winter is putting their well-being at extreme risk. There is not much an animal can do for shelter when it's simply too brisk and wet outside, so it's up to you, as their owner to provide safety.

Guide To Keeping Pets WarmProtecting Your Pets In The Winter

Here's a guide for tips to keep your pet safe, warm and healthy during the winter months:

If you can, keep outdoor exposure to a minimum. Bathroom breaks should be brief as well as outdoor play.

For extended periods spent outside, make sure they are protected by a dry, draft-free shelter. Plastic food and water bowls are necessary to avoid a pet's tongue from sticking to the dish. Warmth can deplete energy, so water is a necessity for indoor and outdoor.

Small pets, like cats, find comfort in the underside of vehicles. Before starting your car, make sure there are no pets held up inside.

Be aware that salt and other chemicals can irritate your pet's paws. Put "shoes" on their paws or wipe paws with a warm, damp towel to remove salt.

Putting up a conventional fence may not always be the best way to keep your pet safe and out of trouble. Your pet could dig under, squeeze through or simply jump over a conventional fence. Pet Fence and Battery Store offers a complete line of Pet Fence / Containment Systems to help you keep your pet in your yard without having to worry about him finding a loophole to get out. Keep your pet safe in your yard or keep them away from chasing cars, walking pedestrians, your garden and out of your neighbor’s yard. Our site includes all the components you’ll need to make any type of electronic training aid to ensure your pet’s safety and obedience.
